KAM OID Optical Interface Detector

Literally like eyes in the pipe, the KAM OID Optical Interface Detector clearly and accurately identifies individual products and product interface in multi-product pipelines.  A simple, analog output streams continuous, real-time data charting product batches and interface within the pipeline. And unlike densitometers, the OID can detect the interface of products with highly similar densities such as diesel and ULSD or many of today’s specialty fuels.

Real-time data allows operators to make the most advantageous cut, significantly reducing product downgrade and/or transmix.  By placing a preview OID sensor 30-60 minutes out from the station, operators are able to determine the optimal placement for the cut prior to the interface arriving in the station. Product quality information from the preview sensor also enables operators to divert contaminated fuels when necessary. A second sensor installed in the station indicates the arrival of the interface which can then be cut according to previous intelligence.  This process prevents the unnecessary product downgrade caution would require when using flow measurement and/or manual intelligence.

A paper on Interface Detection in Liquid Pipelines was presented at the 2011 International School of Hydrocarbon Management in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Patented optical probe utilizes optimal wavelength for interface detection
  • Measures the absorption, fluorescence, and refractive properties of the fluid
  • Combined fluid properties are output as an analog signal, or "optical signature" unique to each product
  • Output signal can be sent to the SCADA, PLC’s, or to a Central Control Room
  • Measurement is fully automatic

KEY KAM ADVANTAGES

  • Detects the interface of specialty fuels such as ULSD
  • Electronics are housed directly on the atmospheric end of the probe
  • No moving parts
  • Insertable model installs without having to drain the pipe
  • Uses LED's for long-term performance with minimal power and maintenance requirements
  • Lenses do not require cleaning

APPLICATIONS

  • Petroleum products interface detection
  • Product transmix management
  • Product downgrade management
  • Pipeline automation
  • Chemicals interface
  • Clear oil interface
  • Batch detection
  • Quality control
  • Theft
